Description: THE CHANNEL SURFERSWHERE I WANNA BE First things first: At least, with this go-round, the album cover isn’t as cheesy as it was for Tunnel Vision. Kind of the casual photo taken while out and about, rather than the we-just-took-a-one-hour-lesson-with-Adobe look of the first one. Good job, mates. Now, on to the musics. We start off with the aptly-titled “Here We Go”, an upbeat funky rock track that channels the Red Hot Chili Peppers meets 311 vibe that they seem to do well. Good start, setting the mood. The title track, “Where I Wanna Be”, is a mid-paced upbeat funky cut with a slightly psychedelic vibe, a nice flange effect and them wacka-cha wacka-cha funk guitar sounds that I so very much like. “Cheese Review” is a heavier cut, kind of like something from the Mother’s Milk-era of RHCP with some serious crunchy guitars. Normally I don’t talk about the lyrical content much, but this song seems to be specifically about the critics of their first album. Heh. “Beach Bums” is another upbeat funky rock cut, with a good guitar lick and a slap bass hook. “Heavenly Places” is the first actual what I would describe as a radio-friendly Sugar Ray type song; it’s upbeat, chill and catchier than some variation of the flu virus I keep hearing about but can’t remember the name of at the moment. Also, it’s kind of a praise song of sorts. So, all of you youth group leaders, take note. Anyway, “Wasteland” has a head-bopping funk hook, some waka-waka crunchy guitars and slap bass…and then there’s a more easy going ska riff for the chorus. It’s like if Rage Against The Machine had a Sublime moment. “Getting Away” is catchy funk rock with a 311 style chorus, containing an interesting bass riff, some crunchy guitar work and a jazzy break that I like. “Look Inside” is another Sugar Ray style radio friendly cut. All upbeat and sunny. “Along For The Ride” is an upbeat Sublime style jam, with a touch of psychedelia and crunchy heavy points. “We Still Believe” is a catchy reggae flavored cut, something that’s inevitable with a band like this. It has a strong Caribbean feel with steel drums utilized at one point. Then, we have the highlight we’ve all been waiting for, the sequel to “Lonely Guys” from the first album, creatively titled “More Lonely Guys”!2 Anyway, more fun James Brown-fronted RHCP style shenanigans, six minutes of listing more names of “lonely guys…then a bit more about Bill Clinton for whatever reason. Timely. On the heals of that, we get probably my favorite cut on the album, “Heavy Metal Parody”, which is exactly what the title says. It’s Steel Panther style hair metal parody, though more of a straight 80s metal style. If this funk alternative rock thing doesn’t work out for them, they’ve got something to fall back on, maybe…I would have said, had I written this back in 1999, instead of 2021. “Still The Same” is a heavier Rage Against The Machine-meets-RHCP kinda vibe, featuring an interesting bass and crunchy guitar riff. Finally, “Now” is a psychedelic funky way to end the album, with a trippy bass and guitar riff going on. So then, overall, like with Tunnel Vision, there is no logical reason for someone like myself to like this album…but I do. I really do. This may fall into the realm of guilty pleasure, had it not been for the top notch musicianship and high-end production values, especially for something released on a relatively obscure indie CCM label that pretty much ceased operations the year after this was released. Not to mention that they’re not afraid to seriously rip into the heaviness when they want to. So, yeah, check out Where I Wanna Be if you haven’t had the chance yet. You might be surprised as I was.
