One focus in this very readable work is the way in which the Tudor monarchs converted the governing elite from a military and clerical base to a civilian and secular one. By the end of the reign of the Virgin Queen Elizabeth I, the affairs of England were in the hands of lawyers and civil servants. The hardcover corners are not bumped but there is a tiny mark on the top of the front board. In addition to a general index, there are copious chapter notes and a bibliography for further reading. There is also an Epilogue that analyses the profound changes in the monarchy that occurred under the Tudors.
