See description below!** Here is an edition that does not come around all that often. This was originally released shortly after the animated move produced by Rankin & Bass in 1977. It was the first fully illustrated edition with the complete original text of the Tolkien's great classic, and being the fully authorized second edition, copyrighted 1966. The illustrations and cinematic sequence drawings bring real life to to the Dwarves, Elves, Dragon and of course, Bilbo. Here are a few examples beginning at the hall of the Great Goblin: Both maps are also included: Oin, Gloin, Balin, Dwalin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Fili, Kili, Dori, Ori, Nori, Thorin, Gandalf, Gollum, The Trolls, The Great Goblin, The Eagles, Beorn, The Spiders, The Wargs, The Elven King, Bard and of course, Smaug; all come to life in some 230 paintings and drawings that will enchant both young and old! This uncommon edition is a must have for all fans of Tolkien's classic. A NOTE ABOUT THIS PRESSING:The original release of this book in 1977 came with a pictorial hardcover and an illustrated glassine (thick clear plastic) cover (as this has), much like an animation cell which had Smaug the Dragon painted on the top left, and the title in white lettering on the bottom right on the front. The Fellowship climbing the mountain was part of the hardcover boards and used as the backdrop for the glassine cover, as shown in the picture at the top of this listing. This copy DOES come with this glassine cover! Though most of the covers were impossible to keep in good condition as it scratched easily, often cracked or bent and many, MANY of them were returned to the publisher damaged, this one is still in EXCELLENT condition, in fact it may be the cleanest glassine cover I have ever seen, and I have sold MANY of these editions. Shortly thereafter a softcover copy was released in a smaller format, but the paper was not as nice of quality, the binding was less than solid and the illustrations suffered greatly. After many years, and thousands of inquiries, a repressing hardcover copy was FINALLY reissued in 1989 with the original paper and illustrations as the original hardcover but with red cloth hardcover boards and a paper dustjacket and slightly smaller in size. ANY COPY with a paper jacket is NOT a first edition, regardless of what the seller claims, and if you can find a cleaner copy of this book anywhere, i suggest you grab it, because I doubt it exists! A VERY clean copy of the book with undamaged glassine dust jacket and one MAJOR anomaly, see below. There is a small amount of shelfwear (and I do MEAN SMALL) to the book itself from age, but nothing I'd even consider worth worrying about. WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT THIS COPY is that it may be the only one in existence that was printed UPSIDE DOWN! When the book was inserted into the hardcover and glued down at the printers, this copy was accidentally placed upside down so when you open it, you are at the end of the book. If you want it in a week or less, you are going to have to bite the bullet and pay for Priority Mail which will get it there in 2-3 working days, 99% of the time, but it is more expensive.
