Description: Hinton Rowan Helper, a native of Mocksville, Davie County, North Carolina wrote "The Impending Crisis of the South", attacking Slavery as detrimental to the prosperity, education and cultural development of Southern Whites, and held the Plantation System responsible for the deforestation of the South. After the Civil War Helper became an ardent opponent of Reconstruction and advocate for poor white farmers. An original May 25, 1880 letter from Helper in St Louis, Missouri, to Lewis A Carmer, a friend in Olean, New York, telling him he has sent him 2 copies of Helper's "little pamphlet Thirteen Papers" (touching on Helper's progressive proposal to build a railroad running from North America to South America), he also informs that Carmer's name is credited on his various papers- "your name as printed is in good company". 1p 8 x 5" magenta ink.
