Description: We are pleased to offer a silverplated crumber with an engraved blade. This piece will appeal to a number of collectors for its connection to The Mattawas Hotel. The blade is engraved with morning glory flowers and it was made by 1847 Rogers Bros. Hiram Walker (of liquor fame) built a railroad called The Lake Erie, Essex and Detroit River Railway to serve his business interests. On the railway's main line and on the shores of Lake Erie, he built a resort hotel called The Mattawas which opened in 1889. It was an elegant place with 120 rooms and wonderful amenities. When Mr. Walker died in 1899, the property was sold. The new owners had tax disputes with the municipality and demolished it in 1902. We are listing other pieces of hotel flatware and holloware and are happy to combine shipping on multiple purchases. Please check our other items. Condition: Overall very good - it has much less than the usual wear and scratches typical of hotel plate. The Mattawas is engraved on the handle.
