Description: "The overland Limited" was a Union Pacific passenger train that was actually operated by three railroads on the Overland Route between San Francisco and Chicago. The Southern Pacific Railroad handled the train west of Ogden, Utah, the Union Pacific Railroad between Ogden and Omaha, Nebraska/Council Bluffs, Iowa, and east of the Missouri River to Chicago it was operated by the Chicago and North Western Railway and later, the Milwaukee. The Introduction by the author states, "The Overland limited, in its mature and useful lifetime, was by no means the most distinguished, opulent or celebrated name train the the long tally of American railroad transports... but it had about it a style and there was a cachet of romance about its going that seems to have attached to no other name train... None of them partook the quality of being Western that was an essential characteristic of The Overland Limited. None of them served San Francisco... Everything about The Overland was the best without ostentation... That is why the author as been moved to write this book about a train whose name must forever be a great blaze of memory, The Overland Limited.
