Founded in 1964 in London by lead guitarist Dick Taylor (formerly of the Rolling Stones as a bassist, the rock lexicon writes [incorrectly] as a rhythm guitarist!) And singer Phil May. They named themselves after the Bo Diddley composition "Pretty Thing" and played brutally American Rhythm & Blues templates. The original cast also included bassist John Stax, guitarist Brian Pendleton and drummer Vic Prince. It was played in ever-changing cast until 1976. May reformed the band in 1980 for the album "Cross Talk" and some live gigs - the cooperation, however, lasted only a year. After a renewed reunion, things are one of the few, if not the only troupe still playing in their 1966 original cast, only reinforced by guitarist Frank Holland, who has been there since 1992. The first CD after over eight years is already being staged by many with their masterpieces of the 60s and 70s. However, you have to listen to this Silverling more often to be able to appreciate him properly. The variety of styles offered here is already amazing. Phil May and his men have really lost nothing. Everything sounds fresh and honest, what comes out of the speakers. With the opener "The Beat Goes On" it goes rhythmically the same thing, here only the text reminds of past times. A trumpet, perhaps rather an atypical instrument for the Pretty Things, is used here and brings out somewhat addictive tones. "Buried Alive" also has the necessary pressure. Over a somewhat gloomy "Livin 'In My Skin", which in the end still takes up driving, we come to the eight-minute, swinging "(Blues For) Robert Johnson". A song with earworm quality and bluesharp comes as a "Pretty Beat". This slow blues is my personal hint on this album. It follows the somewhat imaginative "In The Beginning" with many background vocals. "Mimi" is reminiscent of the typical Bo Diddley beat, which is played somewhat alienated here. Then we come to one of Frank Holland's finely played acoustic slide blues "Feel Like Goin 'Home". This too is a real highlight of this production and shows how much blues feeling is in the band. "The Ballad Of Hollis Brown" is a really successful cover by Altmeister Robert Zimmermann that I like far better than the original, as John Povey's Bluesharp comes into play here very well. The "Freedom Song" puts one in a funeral procession to New Orleans. "Dearly Beloved" and "All Light Up" could also have borrowed an album by the Beatles from the Abbey Road period. "Balboa Island", the name of the album, makes the CD sound very calm and emotional. What the Pretty Things have delivered here corresponds to more independent and audible rock music, all set on a high musical level.
