It's interesting to hear the original, single album of "The River," which includes the songs "Cindy," "Be True" and "Loose End," none of which made the released double album. One reason to purchase this special set is to get the CD with the twenty-two outtakes, which would have made a very good double album in their own right. The best outtakes include "Roulette," "Chain Lightning," "The Man Who Got Away," "Stray Bullet," "Held Up Without A Gun," and "From Small Things (Big Things One Day Come)." Many songwriters wish their officially released songs were as good as these outtakes. In the compelling one-hour documentary, "The Ties That Bind," an older Bruce Springsteen reflects on "The River," and plays several songs from that album on his acoustic guitar. Another highlight is the DVD that includes a Springsteen concert performed on November 5, 1980, at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. The E Street band is in their prime and firing on all cylinders, especially Steve Van Zandt, and the late Clarence Clemons. The concert kicks off in high gear with "Born To Run," travels down "Thunder Road" to the "Cadillac Ranch," and ends with the Detroit Medley: "Devil With A Blue Dress"/"C.C. Rider"/"Jenny, Jenny." Clocking in at nearly three hours, it's an awesome concert! The packaging and book are very well done, but Bruce Springsteen fans should buy this set for the incredible music.
