Description: Very rare and fascinating 1929 book about space and astronomy, with vintage promotional letter from nearly 100-year-old telescope shop. This book comes with a special bonus item: A letter from the store where it was purchased 95 years ago with handwritten notes on the back comparing the sizes of different celestial objects. Normally, I wouldn’t include stray pieces of paper or letters found within a book unless it enhances the item itself. This letter certainly meets this criteria! It appears to have been written by a shop that sold telescopes and other astronomical instruments and materials (such as this book!) and is called “Interesting Facts on Star Lore”. On the back of the letter, someone wrote size comparison of various astronomical bodies. Come on—how cool is that?? This book was purchased c. 1929 at J.W. & Geo. H. Hahn Opticians at 304 Madison Ave., New York City. Beautiful first edition copy of this fascinating 1929 text The Universe Around Us by Sir James Jeans. I believe it is a second printing. The book was published in Sept. 1929 and this copy was printed in Nov. 1929. The binding is solid and all pages and image plates intact. The cover shows some wear and spots—the blue clothe boards would look amazing if professionally cleaned, but even in its current condition, this book is a gem. Pages have age discoloration and a few random blemishes, but nothing that affects readability.
