Description: THELMA WELLMAN (INDIANA) VTG SIGNED ORIG OIL PAINTING “SNOW-COVERED CREEK” Thelma Wellman (1915-1995) lived and painted in and around Fort Wayne, Indiana. Wellman was a graduate of the Fort Wayne Art School and St. Francis College. Wellman taught art at Lafayette Central High School in Roanoke, Indiana in the 1950s. Titled “Snow-covered Creek,” the painting offered here captures a beautiful winter scene of farmhouses and barns in a snowy valley along the banks of a partially frozen creek. Tall oak trees frame the scene and the creek trails off toward low mountains in the distance. The painting is signed in the lower right and is framed in a gold-painted carved wood frame with oak leaf accents. Inscribed in ink on the reverse is the artist’s name, the title of the painting, and the artist’s address and phone number. A label affixed to the reverse also includes the title of the painting as well as its original selling price. Unframed the painting measures 16” x 20” and the overall framed dimensions measure 22” x 26”. While there are some scuffs and scrapes on the frame, the painting itself is in very good original condition, with no signs of paint loss or overpainting, although a light cleaning would help to brighten the colors even more. This is a lovely painting by a listed Indiana artist that would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
