Description: I apologize for the lengthy description, there is a lot to say about these cup plates :-) Thornton Waldo Burgess (1874-1965) was an American conservationist and author of beloved childrens stories. He created many wonderful characters including Peter Rabbit (as did Beatrix Potter in the UK), Reddy Fox, Grandfather Frog and so many more. He was called the Bedtime Story-Man because of his column the Bedtime Stories. As of his retirement, he had written more than 15,000 stories for the column and 170 books. ABOUT THE CUP PLATES These “cup plates” made by Pairpoint glass of New Bedford, Mass are generally grouped into the broad category of Sandwich Glass and are a wonderful commemoration of Sandwich’s native son, Thornton Burgess, who was from Sandwich. Sandwich Glass got it’s name because of the early Sandwich glass made by the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company at the village of Sandwich, Mass., 1825–88. The factory was established by Deming Jarves and produced glass of different types, including blown, molded, cut, and engraved. In the mid-1820s, American manufacturers began to experiment with pressing glass with the use of a lever-operated machine. One of the first items easily and cheaply pressed was the cup plate. It was the custom in the early 19th century to drink tea from a saucer. The cup plate became the coaster for the tea cup. Founded in 1837, Pairpoint Glass Company is the oldest operating glassworks in the country. Originally establihed as the Mount Washington Glass Company, it merged with Pairpoint Manufacturing Company in 1894 and adopted its current name. These cup plates were made around 1975 to the best of my knowledge.
