Description: Description These three antique European phrenology models measure 8.6cm, 8.5cm, and 7.5cm(approximately 3.4 inches, 3.3 inches, and 2.9 inches) in height, respectively. Created in the 19th century, supposedly by Napoleon I's personal physician, these skull models were based on phrenology, the study of the relationship between the shape of the skull and a person's character and mental faculties. Originally part of a 60-piece museum collection, these are replicas produced in the late 19th or early 20th century for educational purposes. Rumor has it that they were based on casts of criminals' heads. Crafted from a marble-dust composite, these models represent a fascinating, albeit controversial, piece of scientific history. Phrenology, popularized by Franz Joseph Gall in the late 18th century, posited that different brain functions were localized in specific areas of the brain, and that these areas could be determined by examining the skull's shape.
