Description: "THREE YEARS IN THE CONFEDERATE HORSE ARTILLERY: A GUNNER IN CHEW'S BATTERY, STUART'S HORSE ARTILLERY, ARMY OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA" By George M. Neese published by The Neale Publishing Company 1911 reprint by Old South Books. Published originally in 1911, these are the memoirs of George Neese during his service as a gunner in Chew's Battery, Stuart's Horse Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Includes Brandy Station, Culpeper Court House, the Crater, being a prisoner at the infamous Point Lookout Prison in Maryland and more. A great primary source on the War for Southern Independence. Unionists and Secessionists, many of whom lived under the same roofs in this divided country. Around the country families were torn apart, people were thrown in jail without trial if they were suspected of being for the South here in Maryland, women could be charged with treason or prostitution if they wore "rebel colors" in their clothing or even failed to smile for union troops. A lynch mob in Hagerstown burned a newspaper office that dare publish an editorial saying that succession was not against the Constitution and that union was not worth the cost in lives and property that was being paid by the people of Maryland. At least one free Black, the ancestor of a friend of mine, left his farm in Maryland to go south and join the Army of Northern Virginia. He would receive a pension from Virginia until his death in the 1930's. The real reasons for why people choose to join either side in the war was much more complex than many biased modern "historians" will admit. This book adds another very interesting look at a terrible war. 236 pages. Brand new condition. Selling on other sites for over $60.00 in this brand new condition.
