Description: Tibetan Thangka from Museum of Man - Rare and Important If you are looking for a rare and exquisite piece of Tibetan Buddhist art, you might be interested in this thangka depicting a Gelugpa Refuge Field. This Thangka was formerly in the San Diego Museum of Man and was purchased by the previous owner in 1983. It is a distemper painting on cloth, measuring 39 1/2 inches by 26 inches (100 cm by 66 cm). The thangka is in excellent condition with the exception that the silk border on the right side is discolored and faded, perhaps by exposure to light. The bottom right corner shows a slight stain, perhaps by exposure to moisture. The thangka shows the lama Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, seated on a lotus throne with a rainbow halo. He holds a lotus stem and a vase of amrita in his hands, and has a small figure of Buddha Shakyamuni at his heart. He is surrounded by a host of buddhas, celestial beings, mahasiddhas and lineage holders in the upper and middle registers. The lower register features a retinue of dakinis, wrathful protectors, Guardians of the Four Directions and nobles. This thangka is a stunning example of Tibetan religious art, with rich colors, intricate details and symbolic imagery. It represents the refuge that all Buddhists take in the Three Jewels: the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha. It also illustrates the spiritual lineage and teachings of the Gelug school, which emphasizes ethics, logic and wisdom.Thank you for your interest. We will consider and promptly respond to all fair offers. We do not have any documentation that this was in the museum. We are honest sellers from San Diego California and we know the individual who obtained it during a sale in 1983 when the Museum of Man sold some of its collection to raise money for other aquisitions. This thangka does not come with the wood and plexiglass box frame that it was displayed in at the museum and by the previous owner. The frame is too large and heavy to ship, and it is not suitable for this precious artwork. You can choose to reframe it or hang it as it is. The thangka will be carefully rolled with proper protective materials and shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube with full insurance. This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of Tibetan Buddhist history and culture. A similar thangka can be seen behind a former King of Tibet in the July 1932 issue of the National Geographic Magazine, which we have included in our photos for comparison. Don't miss this chance to bid on this amazing thangka!
