Description: Tillamook Oregon Postcard. Standard size 3.5" x 5.5". 1904-1918.Card has a few small marks and light corner wear. At the end of First Street there's a steam powered paving machine paving the road along with horses and wagons. A horse and open carriage sit along the roadside with a man sitting faced away from view. Someone looks to be alongside it. This looks to be near a more residential area. Bitulithic pavement was growing in popularity throughout the country around this time. The paving material was made of bitumen and rock. At the time, it was the highest development of modern paving methods. This substance has to be laid at temperatures of 850-800 degrees by the pavers. It was typically dumped from wagons and spread by workers with steel tined forks and shovels, then rolled and rerolled by a steam roller. It immediately sets and becomes hard within about 10 minutes. Bitulithic is nothing more than a dense mixture of stone and asphalt and enough cement to hold the particles strongly and permanently together.
