Description: Time Will Run Back A Novel About The Rediscovery of Capitalism by Henry Hazlitt Arlington House First Revised Printing Description: Hardback book published by Arlington House in 1966. The copyright page states 'Revised Edition published n 1966 by Arlington House, Inc.'. Originally published as The Great Idea in 1951. From the front flap: Henry Hazlitt here sings his libertarian Song of Freedom - real Freedom Song - in an absorbing novel. In the great tradition of George Orwell and Aldus Huxley he begins his tale in the year 2100 in Moscow, capital of Wonworld. Life is completely regimented. Man has neither freedom nor individuality. He scarcely dares to think. To this center of totalitarian power comes 18-year-old Peter Uldanov, son of Stalenin, dictator of Wonworld. Stalenin, having suffered a stroke decides in secret to bring Peter to Moscow and make him his successor. The first part of the story depicts Peter's education in the Communist way of life, particularly his instruction by Bolshekov, ruthless number-two man in the Politburo. Peter learns from Belshekov the deceptive means by which captitalistic America was destroyed, the macabre methods by which the Wonworld "perfect state" rules the world. Truth, Peter is taught is whatever is good for communism. But Peter, who had spent all of his young life in near-isolation in Bermuda, doesn't understand. He is bewildered by the economic cannibalism of Wonworld and appalled by its poverty. Its slave labor, its complete disregard for moral values. The family unit is a relic, but there are plenty of children. "Proletarian men and women," Bolshekov informs Peter, "are permitted to meet each week on Marxday and Stalinsday nights. And no single couple may get together for more than one month without a change of partners." When Peter finally succeeds his father as dictator of the state, his conscience is vaguely troubled. He gropes towards certain reforms, unaware he is re-creating primitive capitalism. The discussions that prompt these "experiments" add a fascinating dimension to the story. For Peter is a kind of 22nd-century Robinson Crusoe. Naturally, he meets bitter opposition. How he copes with it, and the role America plays, bring the action to a crescendo. Henry Haxlitt has fashioned a novel of ideas with an arresting story and a marvelously lucid and logical working out of the timeless truths of free-market economics. Actually he has translated into a fictional situation the insights of his celebrated Economics in One Lesson. At a period when Russia is launching pseudo-capitalism (the fallacies of which Mr. Maxlitt discusses in his Introduction), this book is a timely picture of how to achieve the real thing. Originally issued in 1951 as The Great Idea, this new edition is revised and also includes a new Introduction by the author.
