Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Subtitled “The Great Siege Reassessed”, this book covers the longest siege in British military history, that of Tobruk, a key port in Libya captured from the Italians in January, 1941 and held by the British until November of the same year, besieged for the last 6 months by Rommel’s Afrika Korps. Tobruk was seen as a key element in preventing Rommel invading Egypt and taking the Suez Canal, which would have been catastrophic for operations in the Middle East and Mediterranean, and was kept supplied by sea for long enough for Operation Crusader to be launched in late 1941, which lifted the siege on Tobruk until Rommel pushed back in June 1942 and captured the town, its garrison of 32,000 surrendering after almost running out of ammunition and other supplies. The German advance was held at El Alamein in Egypt, and Tobruk was subsequently recaptured by the British in November 1942 following the successful battle of the same name led by Montgomery. With the entry of American forces into the conflict from the west in late 1942, the Afrika Korps was eventually defeated by May 1943, and the Western Desert War was over. This excellent book by historian Frank Harrison looks at the siege of Tobruk and the subsequent breakout in a new light, and concentrates more on the positive aspects of the battle, as opposed to the port’s loss, which was the second largest British surrender of WWII after Singapore. This 1997 Trade Paperback is in very good condition, with no internal markings and nominal cover wear.
