He was a regular and prolific contributor to The Boys' Own Paper in which most of his fiction appeared in serial form prior to book publication. His best known work was The Fifth Form at St Dominic's, the first of his sequence of boarding school stories, which extended over 38 episodes serialised in The Boys' Own Paper from 1881-82. This story,Tom Dick and Harry, was serialised in The Boy's Own Paper from 1892-93 and first published in book form by The Religious Tract Society in 1894.
