Description: I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut song below.) ....... This is a rare playbill from the week of January 13th, 1958 for the Pre-Broadway tryout of the JAY LIVINGSTON and RAY EVANS musical comedy "OH CAPTAIN!" at the Shubert Theatre in Philadelphia. (The production would open February 4th, 1958 at the Alvin Theatre in New York City and run for 192 performances.) ..... The musical starred TONY RANDALL and ABBE LANE and featured JACQUELYN McKEEVER, EDWARD PLATT, SUSAN JOHNSON, PAUL VALENTINE, STANLEY CARLSON and ALEXANDRA DANILOVA ..... CREDITS: Music and Lyrics by JAY LIVINGSTON and RAY EVANS; Book by AL MORGAN and JOSE FERRER based on an original screen play by ALEC COPPEL; Sets designed by JO MIELZINER; Costumes designed by MILES WHITE; Choreographed by JAMES STARBUCK; Directed by JOSE FERRER; Produced by HOWARD MERRILL and THEATRE CORPORATION OF AMERICA ..... DETAILS: The 16 page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and bios of each of the leading actors as well as a photo of TONY RANDALL in a column written by Arthur B. Waters (third scanned image) ..... CUT SONG: The list of musical numbers includes "The Frenchman's Paree" which was cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: This playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian.
