Traditional WAYANG KULIT Indonesian Shadow Puppet

Description: I'm selling these shadow puppets for a friend (see my other auctions). She wasa folk art buyer in the early 2000s and these examples are from her personalcollection. On this Rawana puppet there are two areas of damage/flaws. Both areslight bends in the leather. See the close-up pics. One on top of the headand the other on one of the points of the left shoulder as the puppet faces right. Puppet Dimensions (stick to top of head): 36"X14.5" Description from the owner: Wayang Kulit are performance shadow puppets in Indonesia, made of female water buffalo hide and water buffalo horn with bone joints (reuniting three parts of the sacred cattle). This is the most traditional form of the Javanese Wayang Kulit, finely carved in great detail with elaborate headdresses and costumes containing mythological characters, and colorfully painted, with gold painted bodies, even though in a performance the audience only sees the shadows. Part of a set of 40 or more like those used by a Javanese puppeteer (dalang) to perform hours-long Hindu epics in Central and East Java. Created by one the finest Wayang Kulit makers in Indonesia, Pak Suprih, who I met at the studio and purchased these from directly in 2006. This example is the same as the sets used in performances at the Sultan’s palace in Yogyakarta. Some wonderfully informative profiles about the artist Pak Suprih can be found on the internet.
