Description: LISTED HERE A MAGNIFICENT SPLENDID MOUNTED PRINT FROM THE ARCHIVES. This fabulous image of twenty years ago depicts Western Maryland Shay No. 6 framed by the rusting Tygart River bridge as it prepares for a day of pulling short excursions out of Elkins depot, West Virginia. This is a particularly picturesque part of the United States of America. The autumn fall colouring of the foliage and the rust-colour bridge framing the Lima Locomotive Works behemoth makes for a very pleasant autumn steam artistic composition. No. 6 was built for Western Maryland coal service, and was shipped to Elkins on 14 May 1945 for use on the 9 per cent grade on the Chaffe branch. It was the last Shay ever built, with a sheer mass of 162 tons, and is the largest Shay in existence. Today, it is still like new and a spectacular example of the fine technology of geared steam locomotives.
