Description: Trans World Airways added Detroit as a gateway city on its Boeing 707 jet services to Europe on May 2, 1963. This new schedule provided Detroit with single-plane jet service to Paris and Rome.This cover was carried on the inaugural Boeing 707 flight from Detroit, Michigan to Rome, Italy (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Jet Age Flights Section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as J-942.In January 2001, Trans World Airlines filed for a third and final bankruptcy and was acquired by American Airlines. American Airlines laid off many former TWA employees in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks. TWA continued to exist as an LLC under American Airlines until July 1, 2003, when all operations were integrated into American Airlines.
