Description: TREE OF LIBERTY Title: TREE OF LIBERTY Publication: NY: Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning, nd [ca.1850's] Description: Broadside, 78 x 59 cm. Hand colored lithograph, with circular vignettes of 31 state seals, plus both sides of the Great Seal of the United States, all positioned on "branches" of the tree. At the base of the tree are three figures representing American strengths in agriculture, trade, and skilled workmanship. Two other vignettes, in small rectangles on either side of the figures, show the landing of Columbus at San Salvador, West Indies, and the pilgrims landing on Plymouth Rock. Information on each state seal includes that state's population in 1850; California's population is given for 1853 as well. Archival repairs to a few cracks and short tears, infilled with Japanese paper, restoration to both upper outer corners (not affecting image), then lined with Japanese paper. Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning were well known publishers of maps, gazetteers, and travel guides. They also produced a broadside of the Declaration of Independence, ca.1858, utilizing vignettes of the seals of the thirteen original states. No listings found on OCLC.
