Description: TS Golden Bear California State University Maritime Academy Vallejo, California Art print of the California State University Maritime Academy’s current training ship TS Golden Bear originally painted on a nautical chart by William B. MacGregor Jr. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The California Nautical School was established in 1929 with the mission "to give practical and theoretical instruction in navigation, seamanship, steam engines, gas engines, and electricity in order to prepare young men to serve as officers in the American Merchant Marine." In 1939 the name was changed to the California Maritime Academy and in 1943 it moved to Vallejo, California. In September 2015, the school was renamed, the California State University Maritime Academy. Commonly called Cal Maritime or CSU Maritime, the school is located in Vallejo California and is the only maritime academy on the West coast. It offers six bachelor's degree programs and one master's degree program. The current academy’s ship was built by Bethlehem Steel in Sparrows Point, Maryland and delivered to the Navy in 1989. She was named USNS Maury (T-AGS-39) and served as an Oceanographic Survey Ship to map the deep ocean floor, she was the largest and fastest oceanographic ship ever at the time she was built. She was placed out of service in September 1994 with an agreement to transfer her to the California Maritime Academy. After she was converted into a training ship, on May 4, 1996, she was transferred to Cal Maritime and named the TS Golden Bear. She is the fourth and largest training ship at California Maritime Academy and the third to carry the name GOLDEN BEAR. She is sometimes nicknamed "Square Bear" because of her unique profile. Currently, the Golden Bear serves as the primary training platform on which cadets apply technological skills introduced in the classroom and leadership skills acquired through work assignments and student responsibilities. MacGregor, Jr. was born in Medfield, MA, the son and the grandson of Norfolk Hunt Club kennel masters who also were artists. Bill is a graduate of Medfield High School, Wentworth Institute, and Northeastern University. His engineering career, from which he is now retired, included working for military and aerospace companies in industrial engineering and IR optics. His painting incorporates “old skool” mechanical and civil drafting tools and he uses a mixed medium of watercolors, acrylics and inks. Two rabbits are often in quite a few of his paintings. Look for them. He is frequently commissioned by United States Naval officers to create paintings of their ships and aircraft carriers on nautical charts. In May, 2018, and for one year, four of Bill’s automotive related paintings were on display at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, MA.
