Description: Bert Wilson was a musician who dedicated his life to the study and mastery of Jazz. In the course of his career he played with many stellar performers: John Coltrane, Roland Kirk, Sonny Simmons, Jim Pepper, Linc Chamberland, Dewey Redman and Jaki Byard, and many others. His lack of recognition by the jazz-listening public, however, seemed due to his lack of mobility. Stricken with polio at age four and since confined to a wheelchair, Bert regained the use of his hands and lungs from playing music. He claimed that it saved his life, and has since achieved a virtuousity of reed instruments beyond the limits normally applied to them. In particular, Bert Wilson has mastered saxophone multiphonics: playing them all over the horn. His approach to multiphonics is to make chords, the way a pianist or guitarist would...on an instrument designed to play one note at a time! He died in 2013 at the age of 73.These 2 albums contain 15 original songs by Bert Wilson, with ample blowing space for himself and the other musicians in the band. On "Live at the Zoo", from a performance at the Portland, OR zoo, there is one composition each from the bassist Chuck Metcalf and pianist Allen Youngblood--and a ballad by Billie Holiday: "No More". These cassettes are mint, still sealed in the plastic wrap. Please view my other listings--I usually have a few jazz LPs up.
