Description: The Paris Commune was a revolutionary government which was initially selected as a city council ( commune) but which later declared itself to have the power to rule all of France. It ran from the 18th March 1871 to 28th May 1871. It was bloodily suppressed by the French Army during bloody week, 21st - 28th May.Up to 15-20,000 were killed In the final days of the commune The Archbishop of Paris was executed, along with a 100 or so priests and gendarmes. The policies of the commune were to separate church and state, self policing, absolution of child Labour, closure of all Catholic Churches and Schools, evolution of a feminist, communist, old style social democracy Many commune members fled to England and Switzerland during bloody week. The illustrator Bertall, which is a pseudonym for Charles Albert D’Arnoux ( 1820-1882) made sketches and drawings during this time and published his work in 1871. These editions are from the English translation in 1873 by an unknown Englishman who was an eyewitness to the uprising. Published as The Communists of Paris 1871 Types-Physiognomies-Characters. The explanatory notes are in English.
