Ukrainian American Modernist Artist Misha Resnikoff Painting Bull On A Bed C1950

Description: For sale is an original painting by the highly regarded Ukrainian American modernist artist Misha Reznikoff (1905–1971) Provenance: The Estate of Maine modernist artist Murray Hantman and his wife Jo Levy: Acquired directly from the artist. The painting appears to be oil on paper board. It depicts a fabulous scene of a large horned bull resting on a four post bed with a portrait of another bull hanging on the wall. Both bulls stare directly at the viewer with quixotical gaze. The painting with inscription on the reverse with both the name of the artist and what looks to be perhaps some framing inscriptions Condition: scattered losses throughout the painting. The loss is giving the painting a vintage feel but yet they are very repairable losses by an art conservatory. Unframed as acquired. Measurements: 15" x 20" Misha Reznikoff (1905–1971) Reznikoff was born in Ukraine and in 1921 immigrated with his family to the United States to settle in Rhode Island. At 22 Misha enrolled at the Rhode Island School of Design where he won a three year scholarship sponsored by S.J Perelman. During this period he meets his long time friend, Arshile Gorky. Their friendship lasts till Gorky’s death in 1948. In the early 30’s he moved to New York where he became introduced to a New York’s generation of the painters. Through the early 30’s he worked as an art instructor at many institutions including Art Students League, Miss Halls School, Pittsfield, MA, and The New School for Social Research. In 1935 he joined the WPA and socialized with Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Ad Reinhardt, Milton Avery, Milton Resnick and Diego Rivera.
