Description: General Willaim Rufus Shafter [1835 1906] was a Union Army officer during the American Civil War who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Fair Oaks. General Shafter was a veteran of the American Indian Wars and also played a prominent role as a major general in the Spanish-American War. Fort Shafter in Hawaii is named in his honor. Listed for auction is a [ALS] autograph letter signed by general William Rufus Shafter. The letter is a response to a collector and reads, ''Dear Sir, It affords me pleasure to comply with your request, Very truly yours William Shafter'' in black fountain pen.
