Description: “United Ireland” Newspaper 1890 Original Printed Caricature “What the British Army and Navy Have Come To” Lithographed in colours from a caricature by J.D. Reigh. It shows John Bull verbally attacking Arthur Balfour (at this time Chief Secretary for Ireland) for his use of troops to evict farmers from their property. Dated at the upper edge August 16th 1890. The “United Ireland” newspaper was a weekly propaganda tool for Charles Parnell and was printed between 1881 and 1890 under the editorship of the fiercely nationalistic William O’Brien. It gave the outward appearance of Parnell being a revolutionary hero when in fact he was more conservative than many in Ireland believed. Though Parnell and O’Brien had strikingly different political views, their relationship was an amicable one and O’Brien was commonly known as “Parnell’s Rottweiler”. Approx. 390x280mm., light peripheral chips, though overall in fine condition.
