Description: The ink drawing offered here is unsigned, but is apparently intended to make fun of a certain type of gentleman of the period. Below is my attempt to determine the meaning of the caption below the image that is the subject of the drawing: "A snob of the first water." I think the word "snob" means the same thing now as it meant in the 19th century. "First water" is an unfamiliar term to me and appears to mean of the highest quality and is a phrase that was used in the 1800s as part of a grading system for diamonds, comparing their luster to the shininess of water. I think that a date around 1860 is appropriate for this piece since it clearly came out of a scrapbook and on the reverse are images from an illustrated weekly such as Harper's Weekly or more likely, the London Illustrated News, which began publication in 1842. The images on the reverse are from the Battle of San Martino which took place in 1859, so I think that the drawing is likely from the same time period. This drawing is from my personal collection which I am beginning to sell off. Unless noted otherwise in the description, the prints, art and other items that I sell are not "reproductions". For example, offered maps are of the period. Please check my other listings for additional items of interest. I will combine shipping.
