Description: From the area of Angola, Congo and Zambia this Chokwe mask is either a Chihongo or Chokwe Mwana Pwo mask. The Chihongo conveys the spirit of power and wealth and Pwo was his consort. The Chihongo was only worn by the chief or one of his sons as they travelled through their kingdom exacting tribute in exchange for the protection offered by the spirit mask and to bring prosperity to the village. It is also used at festivals to summon the spirit of strength. The reason I thought it could be a Pwo mask is the sphere on top of the head, which could depict a woman's hair. There are some fine cracks down the face, but these are minor and commensurate with age. Please look at the photos. With regard to weight this is not a very heavy piece.
