Although the document was published in March 1945, and therefore came too late to be of much use to contemporary military planners, it would later become an invaluable reference work for military scholars. The restricted status of the handbook was revoked in 1953, and in 1995 the Louisiana State University Press produced this reproduction, including a foreword by Stephen E Ambrose, noted historian, academic and biographer of Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard Nixon. The handbook is itself a mighty tome, running to 670 pages, and covers every single aspect of the German military machine in exhaustive detail.
