Description: PLEASE NOTE THAT I PREFER NOT TO SHIP TO HAWAII, PUERTO RICO OR INTERNATIONALLY DUE TO THE RISK OF THE PLANT NOT SURVIVING THE JOURNEY. IF YOU WISH TO COVER THE COST OF EXPEDITED SHIPPING YOU CAN MESSAGE ME PRIOR TO BIDDING OR MAKING THE PURCHASE SO THAT WE CAN DISCUSS EXPEDITED SHIPPING OPTIONS BUT I CAN NOT BE HELD LIABLE FOR LOSSES DUE TO USPS OR OTHER SHIPPING CARRIER SERVICES THAT DO NOT DELIVER ON TIME RESULTING IN THE DEATH OF YOUR PLANT(S) I make every effort to ship plants as soon as payment is received. I do not provide hot packs so be mindful of cold temperatures in your area. This evergreen perennial tolerates mild temperatures when it is young preferably no lower than 60 F. For this reason you may need to be present when the post man delivers your package or have someone collect it from your mail box and bring it indoors to warmer temperatures before it gets damaged. I ship all of my plants via USPS FIRST CLASS 2 to 3 day delivery or FED EX with tracking that is available upon request but unfortunately, sometimes the postal service/carriers does not deliver on time and packages do sometimes get lost. Please understand, this is something that is out of my control. If your plant arrives damaged beyond saving, please message me immediately with pictures of both your package and plant still secured to the box it arrived in so that I may correct the problem as soon as possible. There is no need to leave negative feedback as I always try to answer questions or concerns on a very timely basis, sometimes within minutes of being messaged. Your satisfaction is my greatest concern, and I will do everything possible to make things right. GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY GARDENING :) PLEASE PLANT YOUR ALOCASIA AS SOON AS YOU RECEIVE IT. DO NOT DISTURB THE ROOT SYSTEM DURING TRANSPLANT OR YOU WILL RISK SHOCKING OR KILLING YOUR TENDER YOUNG PLANT. ENSURE THAT THE SOIL/ROOT SYSTEM IS STILL MOIST/WET, PRIOR TO PLANTING. IF NOT PLEASE HYDRATE YOUR PLANT WITH DISTILLED, SPRING OR REVERSE OSMOSIS WATER. NEVER USE CHLORINATED WATER ON YOUNG PLANTS, THEY DON'T TOLERATE IT WELL.ALOCASIA MACRORRHIZA, (ALSO KNOWN AS ELEPHANT EARS OR GIANT TARO), IS AN HERBACEOUS FLOWERING PERENNIAL PLANT SPECIES IN THE FAMILY ARACEAE. NATIVE TO SOUTHEAST ASIA, AUSTRALIA AND NEW GUINEA, THIS ALOCASIA HAS AN EXTENSIVE CULTIVATION HISTORY IN MANY OF THE PACIFIC ISLANDS SUCH AS SOUTH ASIA, THE PHILIPPINES AND OTHER TROPICAL AREAS SUCH AS INDONESIA, MALASIA AND THE SOLOMON ISLANDS WHERE IT FLOURISHES. THIS TROPICAL PERENNIAL RHIZOMATOUS PLANT IS REVERED FOR ITS LARGE, GLOSSY, ORNAMENTAL LEAVES. THE PLANT CAN BE FOUND IN BOTH SOLID GREEN AS WELL AS VERIEGATED (WHITE AND GREEN PATTERNS). IT IS STUNNING AND CONSIDERED THE LARGEST OF THE ALOCASIAS CAPABLE OF GROWING UP TO 15 FEET TALL WITH EXTRAVAGANT LEAVES THAT CAN SPAN FROM 3 TO 4 FT LONG. THEY GROW WELL BOTH INDOORS AND OUTDOORS, IS TOLERANT OF LOW LIGHT CONDITIONS AND IS QUITE EASY TO GROW. IT HAS GARNERED THE NAME ELEPHANT EAR BECAUSE OF THE STRIKING RESEMBLANCE OF THE LEAVES TO THE EAR OF AN ELEPHANT. THE FOLIAGE IS A FAVORITE AMONG GARDENERS BECAUSE OF THE TROPICAL VIBE THAT IT PROVIDES IN THE GARDEN. THE PLANT IS CULTIVATED FOR MORE THAN JUST IT'S STRIKING GOOD LOOKS SINCE IT ALSO BEARS AN EXCELLENT TASTING ROOT VEGETABLE FOOD CROP KNOWN AS TARO. ANYONE WHO HAS EATEN TARO CHIPS OR FRIES CAN ATTEST TO THIS FACT. PERSONALLY, I FIND THEM TO BE MUCH BETTER TASTING THAN ANY POTATO CHIP ON THE MARKET. LIGHTING: THIS ALOCASIA GROWS BEST IN INDIRECT BRIGHT TO MODERATELY LOW LIGHT WHICH IS THE TYPICAL CONDITIONS THAT IT CAN BE FOUND GROWING IN ITS NATIVE ENVIRONMENT. USUALLY, IT IS FOUND BELOW THE CANOPY OF MUCH LARGER TREES IN TROPICAL RAINFORESTS. IDEALLY IT SHOULD RECEIVE NO MORE THAN ABOUT 2 HOURS OF FULL SUN BUT WILL BURN EASILY IF SUNLIGHT IS TOO INTENSE, HENCE THE LEAVES REMAIN MORE PERFECT IN INDIRECT LIGHTING. A MILD MORNING SUNLIGHT IS EXCELLENT FOR THIS TROPICAL BEAUTY THAT CAN BE GROWN OUTDOORS BUT WILL ALSO THRIVE INDOORS IF PLACED NEAR A BRIGHT WINDOW IN A NORTH, SOUTH OR EAST FACING LOCATION.WATERING: THIS IS A WATER LOVING PLANT THAT CAN OFTEN BE FOUND THRIVING IN STANDING WATER OF WHICH IT IS VERY TOLERANT IN ITS NATURAL HABITAT. THE SOIL SHOULD BE KEPT MOIST TO WET BUT NOT SATURATED OR SOGGY. GIANT TARO DOES BETTER IF OVERWATERED THAN UNDERWATERED SO GREAT CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN TO NOT LET YOUR SOIL DRY OUT ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE GROWING YOUR PLANT OUTDOORS DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS. A GOOD RULE OF THUMB IS TO WATER YOUR PLANT IF THE TOP 2 TO 3 INCHES OF SOIL ARE DRY IF YOU INSERT YOUR MIDDLE FINGER INTO THE SOIL. TEMPERATURE: UNLESS YOU LIVE IN A MOSTLY TROPICAL TO SUBTROPICAL LOCATION, YOU WOULD DO BEST TO CONTAINER GROW YOUR ALOCASIA SINCE IT PREFERS TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 55F AND 85F WITH NO TOLERANCE FOR TEMPERATURES THAT DROP BELOW 50F. WARM CLIMATES ARE THEREFORE IDEAL GROWING CONDITIONS IF GROWN OUTDOORS INGROUND, OTHERWISE YOU WILL NEED TO BRING YOUR PLANT INDOORS IF TERMPERATURES DROP. USDA HARDINESS ZONES 9b TO 12 ARE CONSIDERED ACCEPTABLE CLIMATES FOR GIANT TARO BUT IT WILL DO BETTER IN AREAS WHERE TEMPERATURES DO NOT FLUCTUATE OUTSIDE OF THE 55 TO 85F RANGE. HUMIDITY SHOULD REMAIN ON THE HIGH SIDE BETWEEN 50 TO 60% FOR BEST RESULTS. IF YOUR HUMIDITY IS TOO LOW THEN SPRAYING YOUR LEAVES OR USING A HUMIDIFIER WILL KEEP YOUR PLANT HAPPY. DO NOT EXPOSE YOUR PLANT TO HEATERS, AC OR DRAFTY LOCATIONS SUCH AS WINDOWS. WHEN YOUR LOCATION IS IDEAL, TARO WILL THRIVE WITHOUT ANY NEED FOR EXTRA ATTENTION. SOIL: ALOCASIA MACRORRHIZA WILL GROW BEST IN A WELL DRAINING, POROUS, WELL-AERATED SOIL THAT CONSISTS OF A GOOD QUALITY POTTING SOIL, PERLITE AND PEAT MOSS. A PH BETWEEN 5.7 TO 6.3 PROVIDES JUST THE RIGHT ACIDITY FOR YOUR PLANT TO THRIVE. FERTILIZER: A GOOD QUALITY GENERAL HOUSEPLANT FERTILIZER THAT HAS BEEN DILUTED ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURERS RECOMMENDATION WILL BE ESSENTIAL FOR GIANT TARO TO THRIVE BECAUSE IT IS A HEAVY FEEDER THAT WILL STARVE FOR NUTRIENTS IF YOUR SOIL BECOMES DEPLEATED. THIS CAN BE AN ISSUE MOSTLY IF YOUR PLANT IS CONTAINER GROWN. DILUTED HOUSEPLANT FERTILIZER CAN BE GIVEN TO YOUR PLANT EVERY TWO TO THREE WEEKS. AN EASIER OPTION WOULD BE TO USE A SLOW-RELEASE FERTILIZER TO MAINTAIN HEALTHY GROWTH. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED FERTILIZER CONCENTRATION OR YOU WILL BURN THE LEAVES OR ROOTS OF YOUR PLANT.
