Description: Original Concert Poster: This poster is advertising a pair of shows by the Hudson Valley Philharmonic in February 1994 titled "The New Wave" which featured Sterling Morrison of the Velvet Underground playing along with the orchestra. The first night is advertised as at Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, NY and the second night was at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY. Sterling lived in Poughkeepsie at the time. Randall Craig Fleischer, the Conductor of the HVP, had an idea of combining rock with the Orchestra and he wrote an orchestral piece called "Absolutely" which featured Sterling. Fleischer described the piece as "This piece is rock material organized in a symphonic structure. The music is fairly simple and models the harmonies one might expect in a Pink Floyd song. There are opportunities for improvisation from the rock band, especially the guitar. Like the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, where the orchestra echos the violin, there is a dialog between the guitar and the orchestra-a call and answer type of thing. There is a texture in the sound which you don’t often find in rock music, but when I was writing it, my main purpose was to find an expressive voice for the electric guitar."I attended the Poughkeepsie show and I actually am not sure the Woodstock show took place as I can vividly remember a ton of snow on the ground in Poughkeepsie so I believe there was a storm the previous day. There was a 25 piece orchestra plus Sterling. They played for about an hour including numerous works by famous composers, Frank Zappa's "Peaches En Regalia" (The poster advertised The Music of Frank Zappa), and the piece Fleischer wrote described above.I believe this was Sterling's next to last live performances. He would play with John Cale and Moe Tucker at the Andy Warhol Museum in November of 1994 and then sadly passed away in August of 1995. Info: Measures approximately 17" x 22" in overall good condition. This was stapled to the wall at The Chance with 8 staples (one in each corner and one in the middle of each side. Some came out cleanly and some not as clean.) Also since this poster was hung in the chance, they circled the Poughkeepsie show in black sharpie marker.
