Dragons were very prominent in Viking / Norse mythology. Most representations of dragons in Viking art are representations of Jormungandr, the monstrous serpent-like creature created by Loki. This brooch is inspired by jewelry, wood carvings and other artwork found on the Icelandic locality of Fossi, as well as the isle of Gotland (Sweden) and from dig sites in Norway.
