Description: Vintage 1940's Judith McCann Sterling Silver Wingback Earrings~ Signed Vintage 1940's Judith McCann Sterling Silver Wingback Earrings. They measure 1" in diameter x and weigh 25.6 grams. These wingback earrings feature an orange brownish color with hints of purple and pink, see our gallery photo. When photographed under artificial light they are a bright shocking pink with white. These are dome shaped stones or glass, I am not familiar with any stone similar to these. Securely set in sterling silver bezel with a fine rope border and bead balls. They are marked on the back wires of each earring, WINGBACK EARRINGS PAT Wingback Earrings, Pat 2414382. The patent dates these to 1947. On the backs of both earrings there are initials or a maker's mark that I can not read clearly and STERLING. Condition is very good. The stones are in nice condition with no chips or cracks and are secure in their settings, There is no dings, dents or repairs to the sterling silver although the wire backs of these wingbacks may have been bent to put on the ear but they are secure. Judith McCann didn’t set out to become a jewelry innovator, but in her quest to create a comfortable earring back that could hold large stones, that is exactly what transpired. McCann’s first design for her Wingbacks was patented in 1947, although she submitted it in 1944. Improvements were granted to the patent in 1950 and 1952. The name Wingback comes from tiny metal “wings” that slip in place to balance lightly over the curve of the ear.
