Description: VINTAGE 1968 The Golden Phoenix & OTHER FRENCH-CANADIAN FAIRY TALES Over 50 years old, this book is highly endorsed by its longtime fans for the new generations. See reviews below! — Reader Reviews: 5.0 out of 5 stars excellent fairy tales This is excellent for read-aloud, but I've used it as a source for oral storytelling for a few years. There is action, adventure, and silly humor. Although there are familiar elements - motifs that you can find in other folk and fairy tales - by and large these are different enough to be surprising. And they are a joy to tell - although more work than some because they are about 20-25 minutes long. To me, they are perfect stories - adventurous, funny, and satisfying. The 1st-3rd graders who have heard me tell the title story always like it. Mostly. It's a wee bit long for some 1st graders who aren't used to focusing/listening beyond 10 minutes. Usually, there is one (maybe 2) out of a class of 20 who can't stay with me - but that's still pretty good, I think. I love these stories, and I know about them because my younger sister checked this book out from the elementary school library when we were kids (she must have been in 2nd grade, me -4th). She read them, then she TOLD them to me, and I never forgot them. It sure took a long time to find this book again. It is truly a treasure for anyone interested in sharing stories with kids. — 5.0 out of 5 stars This book is awesome. When I was a kid in the 80s I bought a used copy of this book at a book fair. I must have read it a hundred times. The stories are not your usual fairytales. Some of them are downright weird! But so entertaining that they stuck with me for 3 decades. I started looking for a copy of this book basically as soon as the internet became a thing. I couldn't remember the name of it, only that it had a tree on the cover. Now here I am, 40 years old with 2 kids, reading it again for the first time in 30 something years. And it is every bit as wonderful as I remember it being. Buy this book for yourself and for your kids. Keep it in your home so your grandkids can read it. — 5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have book for those who parents who love to read fairy tales to their kids! I searched for over TWENTY years to find this book - it was worth it! The Golden Phoenix was one of my favorite books when I was little. It is filled with excellent French-Canadian stories that are slightly off the beaten path, yet holds true to the great fairy tales of our childhood. They are a refreshing change from the tired old standby's and newer stories that parents may consider too violent or gross for younger children. Recommended for both boys and girls, ages 4-9. — 5.0 out of 5 stars This was my favorite book when I was in the 3rd grade This was my favorite book when I was in the 3rd grade. I've been looking for a copy for years. I now have a son entering the 3rd grade and I want to be able to share this book with him. It is exactly how I remember it. It looks nearly identical to the one I used to check out of the school library all those years ago. — 5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book, you won't regret it. I am more a lover of fairy tales than a student of them. This collection has some stories that I have never seen anywhere else. They are fun, charming, and suitable for children and adults. — The Golden Phoenix The Princess of Tomboso The Fairy Quite Contrary Scurvyhead Sir Goldenhair The Fountain of Youth Jacques the Woodeutter The Sly Thief of Valenciennes
