Description: Featured in this listing is this beautiful, vintage, natural maple finish, beginner model snare drum. This drum is somewhat of a mystery, as there is no badge, decal, sticker or other marking identifying its date and/or place of origin. However, drums sharing virtually all of this drum’s characteristics appear in major drum-makers’ catalogues throughout the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s. A casual sampling finds the “Juvenile School Drum” (1927 Ludwig catalogue); the “Junior Drum” (1927 Premier catalogue); the “Tango Model Snare Drum” (1928 Slingerland catalogue); the “Junior Orchestra Drum” (1933 Leedy catalogue); the “Juvenile Snare Drum” (1937and 1940-A Ludwig catalogues); and the “Juvenile Orchestra Snare Drum” (1941 Gretsch catalogue). I suppose it is possible the shell was refinished along the way, necessitating the removal of the badge or decal, although it doesn’t look refinished; the airhole looks original and undisturbed, and only some of the catalogue images show a badge or decal affixed to the shell. This drum is in excellent condition (especially considering its age), with a few nicks and light scratches on the wood and some corrosion on the thumb-screw tension rods and strainer. Overall, it looks and sounds great. The 1927 Premier Catalogue declares its Junior Drum, “A useful drum and very snappy.” While the 1941 Gretsch Catalogue boasts that its Juvenile Orchestra Snare Drum is “authentically-styled…with mighty fine tone and playing qualities. It’s not a toy, but a real drum that a fellow can actually play.” FEATURES (to the best of my knowledge, all features are original): 3” x 12” maple wood shell (natural finish) Maple wood counter hoops (natural finish) Six thumb-screw tension rods Calf heads – top and bottom Shoulder/neck sling Adjustable snare strainer Wire-wound snares Ships within the continental U.S only
