Description: Vintage Maud Robertson Art Pottery Figurine Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage figurine or sculpture by the listed California artist, Maud Robertson. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This rare piece depicts a female which I believe is a Balinese dancer. The woman wears exotic jewelry which has metallic glazes; her clothing is glazed turquoise blue. The glazed areas contrast nicely with the unglazed reddish clay. This figural piece stands approximately 14 1/2 inches tall, and it is about 7 inches long and 3 inches wide. Unpacked, it weighs 1 pound 10.2 ounces. This would be a fine and rare addition to a collection of California pottery or art. Identification This piece has incised markings beneath, "Maud Robertson Laguna Beach Cal." On askART, there is a listing for a Maude [sic] Robertson of Laguna Beach. Per askART (originally from Edan Hughes' Artists in California 1786-1940), Robertson was a resident of Laguna Beach during the 1930s, and she was treasurer of Laguna Beach Art Association. Per askART, she was known for painting and photography, but she must have worked in ceramics, also. She exhibited at Laguna Beach Art Festival in 1932 and at the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939. Per additional online research (Santa Ana Register newspaper articles from the 1930s), Robertson was a member of the Laguna Beach Music Lovers Club and she was on the art committee for the Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts. My research also shows that she lived from 1882 to 1971. The age of this undated piece is not known. Condition This piece looks very good overall, with no cracks. There is a 1/16 inch surface flake on her left foot and there is very minor roughness on the toes of her right foot. This item has very light wear, with a few scattered, faint scuff marks to the unglazed areas. There is some tape residue beneath. Please review the description and photos, and ask any necessary questions prior to bidding or buying. Terms of Sale 1. Payments Taxes may be applicable.
