Description: Each deck has 52 cards. The blue deck has one joker. One card in the pink deck is missing a corner (pictured). Bernard J. Dondorf was born in 1809 and established a lithographic printing business in Frankfurt Germany 1833 which, amongst other items, printed playing cards. B Dondorf was arguably one of the finest printers of his era printing some amazing playing cards during the company's 100 year history. Ironically it was the quality and expensive production process that ultimately contributed to the the demise of the company in 1933. This is a double deck of mini card (travel size). The leather case has four gold cards inscribed and the GERMANY embossed. The case is a little less than 3.5 inches long, a little more than 2.5 inches tall, a bit over an inch wide. The cards are abotu 1.5in by 2.25in. The case has some wear (pictured). This is the ‘patience’ set catalogue number 187 in the Dondorf records. It is described as a period costume deck sub titled “Stuart period”. Although not that historically accurate the costumes on the courts are flamboyant particularly the Jacks (B) which are cavalier like. The Queens (D) have luxurious accessories such as necklaces, mirrors, peacock feather fans. The kings (K) also have rich costumes and portray power, the king of Diamonds looks like an emperor. The cards are German printed in Frankfurt c. late 1920 ’s - 1933. Dondorf was a manufacturer of playing cards, lithographic pictures and stationery items and operated for a 100 yers between 1833 -1933.
