Description: This vintage handmade handkerchief doll has a captivating story. Handkerchiefs like the one used for this doll were sold during WWII for GIs to send to their loved ones. Some were embroidered with "Sister," some were "Wife," and this one was embroidered with "Mother." It was lovingly sent home by a GI to his mother who anxiously awaited the safe return of her son. The GI eventually returned home and got married. Many years later, his wife had the handkerchief made into a doll by Vaughn Melander, a local artisan of handkerchief and pillowcase dolls--and the GI made the wooden stand for it! The doll is signed by the crafter, was made in Jan. 1994, and is No. 15. She is 12 inches tall and has a dress that is about 15 inches at the widest point. The dress features lace and a scalloped edge that matches the reddish orange handkerchief. Embroidered on the handkerchief is "MOTHER," the winged star, and "A.A.F." which stands for Army Air Forces. The wooden stand is 3" by 3 1/2" and is 5 1/4" tall. This original piece is a must-have for any doll enthusiast or collector of WWII memorabilia.
