"THE FILE WITH THE PURPLE TANG" -About THE HAYES FILE COMPANY - Established in 1870 as the Detroit File Works, Hayes File Company was incorporated in 1888 and relocated from West Fort Street to 1986 Franklin Street in 1900. The two story building was constructed for the file maker by Thomas Fairbairn & Co. Hayes File has continuously occupied the property since that time, however, they no longer manufacture files. In the 1950s, in the face of changes in the file manufacturing processes, the company converted from making files to sharpening files, knives and other instruments for the medical, food, mold injection, fabricating and recycling industries. The former Essex Brass Company building next door at 2000 Franklin Street was purchased in 1978.
