Description: A lovely pre World War 2 I Sorby Smoothing Plane. This is designated the S4 (same size as a "standard" No 4 smoother with a 2" cutter). It has been disassembled and cleaned, including all small parts being wire wheel cleaned. The rear handle has been repaired by me, there is a break across and down toward the bottom of the handle where it engages with the base and screw boss. All parts were salvaged. The bottom section of these handles is a weak point, commonly seen broken in both these and the early marples planes which have a similar handle shape. The repair came out very well however and is barely visible. Cutter is an I Sorby one with plenty of life left and will need sharpening if put to use. Aside from this plane being fairly rare, I was very impressed with the build quality. The fit of the frog to the sole of the plane is very good and with minimal play when seated. These planes are sought after for a reason! I'm happy to combine postage costs where I can. Thank you for looking.
