Description: This marvelous Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock is one of a “prize collection of 8 beautiful and famous Japanese woodblocks, reproduced from the rare, old originals”; published by Penn Press, New York circa mid to late 1950s. The Japanese term, ukiyo-e means “pictures of the floating world,” a euphemism for the entertainment or pleasure districts of urban centers. Ukiyo-e were painted illustrations of Japanese daily life in urban centers, mercantile and trade, travel, landscapes, and seasons and weather, throughout the 1600s, 1700s, and 1800s. Unused, never framed; stored in the portfolio folder, untouched, for decades. May be a faint smudge here or there on borders, or faint crease in card stock from handling and storage, in one or two of the eight prints, but overall very good to excellent condition. This print is one of a collection of eight Japanese prints from same collection, each sold separately.
