Vintage Kenwood Portable Compact Disc Player | DPC-55 | Ultra Rare 1988

Description: Read First!! This unit works (please watch the video) but the charging port needs some TLC to work, or needs to be replaced. You have to apply downward pressure on the plug for it to draw power. If you lived during the 80s and 90s, boy are you used to solving this problem. This is a very simple fix that can be solved by bending down the male end (positive) or by having a new port installed. This is an easy repair and the parts are readily available. Personally, I did not fix it (this item came from an estate sale) because either the new owner was going to add it to his collection and not use it, or would be willing to take it in and have it changed out. If you do this, please have the technician take a look at all the capacitors on the PCB (motherboard). The most common failing point for vintage electronics is a swollen capacitor (again a generic part every technician has). But obviously these ones are working otherwise the unit would not function. But it may not hurt to have them changed out so this device would be good for another 30 years. Item Description This listing is for a virtually impossible to find Kenwood DPC-55 portable Compact Disc Player. This is likely one of the very first portable cd players to be developed by Kenwood. Sony was the advertising king at the time so their players are the best known, but Kenwood was producing fantastic, if not more advanced models during this period. This one has both a rechargeable battery pack and a separate line out feature so it could be played on a full stereo system. It is extremely hard to find information on this system and I could not find a single one for sale on Ebay going back twenty years (I pay for a service that archives all Ebay listings). This one was manufactured in 1988 and the oldest other ones I can find start at 1991. Item Condition I made sure to take as many pics as possible. So please take a close look at the pictures for exact condition as I tried to take them from every angle possible. After all, some people's “perfect” is another person's “mauled by a bear.” There is some very noticeable scratching on the front of the player. The buttons are solid and the case opens and stays shut as it should. The first thing I did when I acquired this item was to inspect the rechargeable battery for expansion or corrosion before I plugged it in. It appears fine, though I doubt it would hold a charge after all these years. In case you are wondering the part number on that is "Kenwood Model LB-3 W09-0083-05." If you are lucky you may find one, stranger things have happened . . . Again, aside from the charge port issue this player works just fine. All the features work and I did let the CD play for 40 minutes (yes, I suffered through holding the connector down the whole time) so the laser works fine along with all the other buttons and the headphone jack/line out. Unless I am dead or in a coma at the hospital, this item will be at the post office the same day if it is purchased before 4:00 PM MST. Otherwise, it will be there first thing in the morning. I just don’t do it officially because I have been burned a couple of times by buyers on some high value items.
