Description: Vintage LIFE Magazine – October 1981 – Marilyn Monroe (Volume 4 Number 10) Marilyn Monroe was an American actress, singer, and model. Famous for playing comedic "blonde bombshell" characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950’s and early 1960’s, as well as an emblem of the era's sexual revolution. She was a top-billed actress for a decade, and her films grossed $200 million. By 1953, Monroe was one of the most marketable Hollywood stars; she had leading roles in the film noir Niagara, which overtly relied on her sex appeal, and the comedies Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire, which established her star image as a "dumb blonde". The same year, her nude images were used as the centerfold and on the cover of the first issue of Playboy. She won a Golden Globe for Best Actress for her role in Some Like It Hot (1959), a critical and commercial success. Her last completed film was the drama The Misfits (1961). Monroe's troubled private life received much attention. She struggled with addiction and mood disorders. Her marriages to retired baseball star Joe DiMaggio and to playwright Arthur Miller were highly publicized, but ended in divorce. She was also rumored to have affairs with JFK and his brother Robert Kennedy. On August 4, 1962, she died at age 36 from an overdose of barbiturates at her Los Angeles home, labelled as suicide. Long after her death, Monroe remains a major icon of pop culture. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked her sixth on their list of the greatest female screen legends from the Golden Age of Hollywood. This issue does not contain an article solely on Monroe, but she is referenced as part of a discussion of FOOFs. A FOOF is a Friend Of Old Films, who adored old movie stars and collected memorabilia on their favorite stars and the movies they were in. Marilyn’s biggest FOOF has a collection of over 10,000 magazines with her photo on them. These old Life magazines are a great reminder of days gone by. They contain the history that we have sometimes forgotten, whether it be news about a significant world event, an entertainer, a sports star, or a politician, it reminds of our youth and the status of our world back then. Just reviewing all the old advertisements is itself a fun time, remembering how products were advertised … the autos, the cigarettes, the clothes, the appliances, etc. Many of those companies are no longer in business. The magazine over 40 years old and for its age is in very good condition. Yes, it has the typical scuff marks, small spots, little tears and creases, and yellowing that comes with its age. There are no missing pages, and there is no handwriting or highlighting on the page, and no water stains.. Note: Please read the full description and view the listing photograph to clearly understand the condition of the magazine. We do attempt to highlight any significant issues and significant flaws that are visible. These magazines have nearly 40 years of wear on them, and are not new/pristine from the first day they were published. Typically we will list a flawless or nearly flawless magazine as Very Good and not Excellent. Those that have no cover damage except minor creasing are considered Very Good. Those that have repairs to the cover or spine, have missing pages, or water stains are typically listed as Good and sell for a reduced price. It’s a wonderful item for those who want a complete, original, average condition issue to read and enjoy. It makes a great piece of history for someone who is budget minded. 154 Total Pages GTT #01058
