Barnum and Bailey Circus for most of his life. A Brief History Of The Artist And His Work "Circus under the BIG TOP - 1937" is a 22" x 28" mixed-media watercolor, produced during the 1930s by Bert Sharpe, a clown who worked and traveled with the Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus for most of his life. The painting was a gift from Mr. Sharpe to his younger brother, George, (1902-1991) of Cranston, Rhode Island, who hung it on a basement wall, where it stayed virtually unnoticed for nearly fifty years. During those years, Mr. Sharpe's brother-in-law, I. Lawson Wilkinson, became a frequent admirer of the work. Shortly after Mr. Sharpe's death, his widow, Margaret, gave the painting to Mr. Wilkinson, her brother. Wishing to share the work with family, friends and other fans of the circus, Mr. Wilkinson had it reproduced in 1995 Mr. Sharpe, a native of Southbridge, Mass., reputedly had little formal art training, but nevertheless managed to record the excitement, detail, and variety of the circus as he saw it during his many years with the show. The work is a fanciful representation of a three-ring extravaganza, featuring more than 150 performers Thanks for Looking
