Description: This listing is for a vintage Ruth Gibb's Godey's Little Lady doll. The doll stands about 7" to 7 1/2" tall and has a porcelain / china head, hands, and feet. She has a cloth torso, cloth upper arms and cloth upper legs which are stuffed with either cotton or wool batting. This Little Lady doll has reddish brown / auburn hair, blue eyes and a pale, rose pink complexion. On her feet she wears gold painted slippers. She was hand painted and is absolutely exquisite. She is in wonderful condition for her age. Her white cloth body is clean and bright white with no stains.. The outfit she is currently wearing is a re-sized, re-made re-fitted Mme Alexander Co. outfit which was created for their 8" Wendy doll. It is the "Polly Flinders" outfit, comprised of the following pieces: (1) a cotton print dress in peach and beige with a heart and leaf motif, (2) a coordinated cotton print apron in beige and peach with a tiny floral motif on a checkered background, (3) a white, cotton, full skirted petticoat with netting underneath and cotton crocheted lace trim at the hem, and (4) white, cotton pantalettes with cotton crocheted lace trim at the hem matching the petticoat. Ruth Gibbs began creating dolls in the early 1940s and obtained a patent for her her "Godey's Lady Book Dolls" in 1948. These dolls were produced in a factory in Flemington, NJ where Ruth's husband, Herbert Johnson, was the manager. The dolls came in two sizes: a 12" and a 7" doll, with the 7" dolls (like this one) being the most popular. The dolls' faces were all hand painted by different artists, so they vary slightly from one doll to the next. The earliest dolls had porcelain white complexions and looked more like antique china dolls. Later dolls had pale pink complexions (like this doll) or sometimes even brown complexions (rarer). The later dolls had more modern pageboy hairstyles. Hair colors were black, brown, blonde, and red. Their tiny shoes were mostly painted gold but there were other colors, too. *PLEASE NOTE* I have suggested this doll as a possible friend for Hitty because my earliest Hitty was actually a Ruth Gibbs Godey's Little Lady Doll. I just didn't know it at the time (1952). I didn't know there was a whole world of actual hand carved wooden Hittys and Hitty carvers out there waiting for me to discover. That finally happened with the arrival of my granddaughter in 2006. But, I still treasure my Ruth Gibbs Hitty and the wardrobe of clothes my mother made for her. She and all the Ruth Gibbs dolls will always hold a special place in my heart. I hope this beautiful little doll will find a special place in someone's heart and that she will be cuddled and played with for many years to come.
