Description: C. V. Schmidt Model 24 Reloading Press. This massive press supersedes the Model 12 that was evaluated so glowingly reviewed circa 1937 by Philip B.l Sharpe in his 'Complete Guide to Handloading. Phil met 'Connie' Schmidt at the National Matches and was so impressed that he bought one of his presses. I believe the patent dates for the Model 12 are in the late 20's. Both this press and the prior Model 12 resize, decap, and neck expand in one operation. Both also have automatic primer feed, using rectangular primer feed tubes much like the Bonanza priming tool. Most contemporary tools required separate steps for each operation, and required the user to handle each primer separately. The Schmidt's were thus both faster and more precise than the competition. Seating is straight-line by mounting the co-axial seater die in the pivoting holder that previously held the sizer die. The seater is easily misplaced, and thus is frequently missing. This tool is complete except for primer feed tube(s) and seater die. Feed tubes for the Bonanza priming tool are very similar, and just a bit too fat to fit. They may possibly will fit if carefully filed down on the open end to fit the guide on this tool. Think about it: automatic primer feed and guided straight line seating; almost a hundred years ago! The word 'rare' is over-used to describe scarce things like this. I will only observe that the Model 24 makes the scarce Model 12 seem common. This tool does all the same things as the previous Model 12, using the same dies and shell holders, but with better leverage, and about twice as much steel. Why Schmidt didn't offer full-lenght-size dies for it is a mystery, unless he was already planning for his rare press that ONLY full-length sizes, and didn't want to upstage his own future offering. This press has a shell holder and size-decap-expand die for 38 Special. Seems a bit like using a cannon to swat a fly. Far too big for a USPS Flat Rate Priority box, so this will go UPS ground, and cost will depend on your address. Handle will be removed for shipping to facilitate packing this well. The steel rule in the first picture is only so you can grasp the size of this tool; not included. The last of my pictures shows the handle attachment. The screws retain little plates which fit in grooves of the pivot pins to retain the pins. I am and will be listing more collectible vintage reloading tools, some at penny auction. Be sure to check our other present an forthcoming listings.
