Description: Up For Sale: Vintage Trench Art 50 BMG Manual Cigarette Lighter w/ Base ATC Japan WWII DM 4 The brass used is from the Des Moines Ordnance Plant (DMOP) who made .30 and .50 cal from January 1942 through July 1945. The base is one piece machined alloy with initials A.T.C. - From my research, ATC was a Japanese company who manufactured lighters in the mid 20th century after World War II - Not much is known about this piece (estate sale find, crazy amount of radios from 1890s to 1970s) but it's likely to have been made by ATC in Japan, possibly from found spent brass after the war. Following WWII Japan was under Allied occupation, led primarily by the U.S. - During this time a practice became popular of making found items into art - lighters were among some of these art pieces, and they were made from materials like brass, metal, and ceramics - This period of time was known as "Occupied Japan" and the lighters of this period became known as "Occupied Japan Lighters" - Fun facts aside, I do not believe this to be of such origin, though it may have been inspired by it - Similarly, the term "WWII Trench Art Lighter" has a bit of a storied past and actually began out of WWI, then was subsequently co-oped by salesman to sell more lighters - it has also become somewhat of a generalized collectors term due to how the internet works, SEO/Keyword searches etc (Search Engine Optimization) - And as such, I do not believe this to be "Trench Art" either - Nevertheless; this is a pretty neat piece, it is well-built, some would say "over-built" myself included - IMHO, working with militaria at my day job, it is my best guess this was machined in a factory with means to produce heavy-duty equipment, I mean could you imagine someone machining the base for this thing today, modern productivity/manufacturing practices/inflation etc ;) I digress.
